Pedestrians in Barcelona

Intelligent Space is a centre of expertise on walking as a transport mode. Promoting walking is an essential part of the move to more sustainable transport, as shown in guidance such as Local Agenda 21 and the OECD Environmentally Sustainable Transport Guidelines. In London where we are based, the Mayoral Transport Strategy aims to make London 'one of the most walking friendly cities for pedestrians by 2015' and Intelligent Space is actively involved in projects to help achieve this aim.

Walking still accounts for over 80% of all journeys made under a mile in length and in big cities it is a key component of transport: 40% of all inner London trips are by foot. But without active policies, walking will continue to decline as it has done for 25 years (falling from from 35% of all trips in England to 26%).

Our work helps to support the development of livable and sustainable urban infrastructure by providing:

  • Sustainable Transport Strategy
  • Movement Modelling
  • Pedestrian and Cycle Use Data
  • Transport Safety Assessments

These services are used by local councils and developers to implement sustainable transport schemes and inform initiatives such as Safe Routes to School or Clearzones. The company acted as independent cross-party technical advisors to the recent UK Parliamentary debate on Walking in Towns and Cities.
