On 2nd December 2006, Oxford Street hosted London's biggest ever traffic free event. As part of a unique shopping experience in the area, a special VIP (Very Important Pedestrians) Christmas Shopping Extravaganza was organised. This involved the majority of Oxford Street and Regent Street being closed to vehicular traffic creating a pedestrianised shopping environment for the day.

Oxford Street VIP Day, 2nd December 2006

This unique event provided a rare opportunity to study pedestrian behaviour along Oxford Street in a pedestrianised environment. Transport for London commissioned Intelligent Space to conduct a study of the key pedestrian movement issues arising throughout the day. This involved pedestrian flow surveys, surveys of streetscape quality, pedestrian amenities and barriers to pedestrian movement.
