Area of Pedestrian Observation Along Tram Route

Intelligent Space Partnership was part of the winning team on the Tram Spaces and Places competition. The project involved a public space audit, analysis of ‘desire lines’ and forecasting of pedestrian flow numbers for an area extending 500 metres either side of the proposed Cross River Tram route. Intelligent Space Partnership combined state of the art computer models of pedestrian movement with a massive survey of pedestrian flows around the tram route. Flows were sampled at over 300 locations by a team of trained observers. The modelling of pedestrian movement for over 18 square kilometres of London was used to pin point locations where the new tramline could act as a catalyst for regeneration.

The project culminated with a series of demonstration projects to be designed by Studio Bednarski and realised along the route from as early as 2005, ahead of the construction of the tramline. The key to making sure that new public spaces are vibrant and enjoyable is to fit them into the everyday patterns of movement by people in the area. This research helped the architects on the project to create new spaces in places where ordinary people can find and use them.
