The Support Services research project was tasked with identifying how the non clinical services, or “support service” provision impacts on the patient journey through Accident and Emergency Departments. The aims of the study were to identify areas of good practice, develop appropriate performance standards and prioritise areas for improvements.

NHS Estates asked Intelligent Space Partnership to identify design features that support existing working practices as well as the ability of departments to adapt to change. This was undertaken using evidence from space use analysis and computer modelling of eight A&E departments. The findings of the project will be used to support guidance for the building of future departments.
