Background

Increasing the amount of day to day walking in the capital is a key policy objective of the Mayor's Walking Plan. However, there is a lack of information for policymakers about where key walking routes are in London and how much walking is actually taking place on each. Central London Partnership commissioned Intelligent Space Partnership (ISP) to identify the most important streets for utility walking and provide Stakeholders with a clear map of the main network.

What we did

ISP developed a pedestrian model which provides estimated flows for the whole 25 square kilometres of the central congestion charging zone, incorporating over 7,500 street segments. This is being used to identify the key routes with over 600 people per hour and map the walking network as an integral part of the overall transport system of the city.

Outcomes

This ongoing project will provide stakeholders with a map of all the main streets for functional (or utility) walking in central London and serve as a decision support tool for walking policy
