Health and Crime: Reducing Crime by Design

Matrix and Future Healthcare Network
Thursday 16th June 11am to 12.30pm

Anti-social behaviour, urban disintegration, young people roaming bleak urban landscapes - these stark images of life in our cities are loved by the media and politicians but how much do they reflect the reality of crime and its environment? How much influence does the spatial design of where we live and work affect our behaviour and our health?

Matrix and the Future Healthcare Network have brought together a team of experts with design, healthcare and police backgrounds to explore these issues and share their experiences in an interactive discussion session. Our team of speakers includes:

  • Elspeth Duxbury from Intelligent Space, whose recent work in the Home Office Safer Hospitals project and Mapping Street Crime Risk offers another perspective into how physical space can influence and prevent violence and crime across the community; and
  • Mike Wade from Torbay PCT who has been working in partnership with the local police to address alcohol and drug misuse, and other aggressive behaviours through innovative schemes such as a 24 hour mental health line, a campaign to reduce drug related litter and a street warden scheme. He will be joined by colleagues from Devon and Cornwall Constabulary.

Matrix have broad knowledge of the links between health and crime, gained by analysing and helping to shape policy in both sectors. Our work with the Home Office on assessing the effectiveness Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships, Drug Action Teams and other initiatives gives us unique insight into the inter-relationship between health, crime and communities.

Delegates will have an opportunity to debate the issues as well as to pose questions to our panel of speakers about the links between health, crime, and environment, and to develop a checklist of questions to ask in their organisations. This promises to be an interesting, challenging and thought provoking session - we hope to see you there.
