Intelligent Space Begin Innovative Crime Risk Mapping Project |

Intelligent Space Partnership is carrying out an innovative research study that will measure, identify and analyse street crime risk patterns in central London. This first of its kind study will link high resolution pedestrian modelling data with precise data on robbery and theft snatch to generate a detailed picture of how the risk of being a victim of these street crimes differs to their volume, or hotspot, patterns. The project is being undertaken in collaboration with the Jill Dando Institute for Crime Science. Street crime is of growing concern in the UK and government targets set the reduction of street crime as a top priority. The Home Office target a 14% reduction in street crime in the 10 forces covered by the Street Crime Initiative. Targeted initiatives have had some impact, but serious problems of street crime still remain. The research will use pedestrian counts generated using Intelligent Space's expertise in pedestrian modelling and crime data for the City of Westminster area in London (a project partner for this research). Pedestrian modelling techniques offer a useful data source for helping to calculate street crime risk. These techniques provide accurate counts of pedestrians at the street level and can be calibrated to model pedestrian volume changes by time of day. For more information, contact
