| 15 November 2001 | Intelligent Space Win AGI Award for Innovation |
||||
Intelligent Space have been given an award for innovation by the Association for Geographic Information at a ceremony in the City. The award was for their analysis and modeling of crowds at the Notting Hill Carnival. The project was commissioned by the GLA and Intelligent Space brought together an interdisciplinary team for the project, including the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at UCL, who were joint recipients as key members of the Intelligent Space project team. Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, said: 'I am delighted that Intelligent Space have been given this award for innovation. Their research has been absolutely vital to the review of Notting Hill Carnival and their independence has helped us move towards a consensus for a route change, which is needed if safety is to be improved.' The Mayor's Carnival Review Group commissioned Intelligent Space to evaluate crowd density and movement as a part of the review process aimed at increasing crowd safety and protecting the long-tem future of the largest event of its kind in Europe. The Intelligent Space team also used police helicopter footage, footfall surveys, tube counts and St John's Ambulance accident and illness figures. The Mayor said: 'This was the most comprehensive study ever undertaken into crowds at Carnival' The aim of the study was to provide the Mayor's Carnival Review Group with guidance on improving crowd safety and an evaluation of the merits and risks of alternative routes. The final report from the Carnival Review Group is due to be published later this year.
