Pedestrian safety

Men crossing the road

Intelligent Space provides expert advice on the management of conflict between pedestrians and vehicles. In many urban areas, transport infrastructure has been designed without sufficient regard to pedestrian behaviour. Where facilities do not work to support natural movement paths, the risk of pedestrian accidents is increased.

Benefits

  • providing evidence on the causes of accident risk
  • benchmarking the functional performance of crossing facilities
  • identifying the desire lines for road crossings to advise development plans
  • strategies to minimise pedestrian risk through streetscape improvements.

This approach to pedestrian safety provides a quantitative method by which crossings can be assessed both on their accident risk and accident rate. This enables councils to target their resources to locations of greatest need and where small changes to road layout can bring large gains in safety.

Previous work in this field includes:

  • Analysing pedestrian flows, road crossings and accident locations to advise on pedestrian safety improvements for St Giles Circus in central London
  • Optimising the locations of new pedestrian crossing facilities in Shoreditch as part of Transport for London's traffic reform
  • Supporting Camden Council's Clear Zone strategy though surveys and spatial analysis, to identify locations where road infrastructure does not support optimal pedestrian movement.
