Summary of experience

Jake is a founding Partner of Intelligent Space and directs the urban and public space division of the practice. He is responsible for the development of ISP’s pioneering software for modelling pedestrian flows and has led a range of high profile projects in pedestrian movement consulting, such as the analysis of crowding at Notting Hill Carnival and the development of a pedestrian model of central London. He was an independent cross-party expert advisor to the 2002 UK parliamentary debate on Walking in Towns and Cities.

Jake’s background is in property development and planning and he studied at the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, University College London. His PhD at UCL was about using computer models to identify the influence that the spatial structure of a city has on the pattern of rental values. He has led consulting and research projects on pedestrian movement and space use in the UK, Germany, Australia and Chile. Prior to founding Intelligent Space, he worked as a director of Space Syntax Limited, as a property market analyst with Kolpron in Berlin and as a researcher at University College London. He has published widely on the subject of pedestrian modelling and spatial analysis and he is co-author of CABE's 2006 book "The Cost of Bad Design."
